Yes, that is what he would do.įriday arrived without fanfare and Mycroft sat at his desk waist-deep in paperwork on an otherwise dull afternoon. He could always cancel, right? If Friday afternoon arrived and he had the same worries, he could text the man and cancel due to a national issue. What had he been thinking? He dropped his head into his hands. Mycroft had hoped, by saying it wasn’t Sherlock-related, that Inspe– He should really start using the man's name if he wanted to pursue a relationship with him – Gregory would understand that this was more than just a check up on Sherlock. Perhaps Mycroft should have said it was to do with Sherlock, so the inspector would have been more accepting. Clearly the inspector was just being polite in his acceptance since Sherlock was not the reason. That had been more painful than Mycroft had thought it would be. Would you care to have dinner with me Friday evening, 8pm? MH His message system was up before he could talk himself out of it. Mycroft decided, against his better judgement, to try. The only things he had going for him was his wealth, his power and a comfortable flat in Pall Mall. He was too thin and his hair… well there was less than there used to be. What was he even thinking? No one in their right mind would want to date him… Mycroft didn’t know the first thing about dating or relationships. Nothing that said I care for you more than a casual business associate. But what were the chances that Detective Lestrade might feel something for him? They had spent time together here and there since Mycroft had him picked up shortly after the inspector started letting Sherlock into crime scenes.īut their time together consisted of dinners once in a while where they discussed Sherlock, Sherlock’s health, John Watson’s character and the state of the nation. There was only one person that came to mind when Mycroft thought of caring for another person. His hand was on his phone before the car door shut behind him. The words followed Mycroft out the door and to the car waiting for him. Hand pressed to his chest, mind screaming at him how wrong these thoughts were, he almost missed his brother’s words echoing down the stairs to him. As he left, unable to stop the aching in his own heart, his mind supplied thoughts of finding his own goldfish to love. He was happy for his brother, naturally, but it made his loneliness show stronger. Mycroft had the honor of walking into Baker Street at just the right moment to bear witness to their first kiss. Thankfully, shortly after Sherlock’s return two years later, John Watson broke up with his girlfriend and let his intentions towards Sherlock be known. Lestrade and John Watson, Mycroft wasn't sure if John would be able to forgive Sherlock's lies. But when Sherlock was forced to jump from the roof of St Bart’s to save the lives of his three closest friends, Mrs Hudson, D.I. Watson’s protectiveness of Sherlock showed that he clearly loved him, whether John was ready to admit it or not. Mycroft had almost stepped in to remove Watson from Sherlock’s life, thinking that it would be better in the long run, but then Moriarty arrived. Mycroft watched his brother fall in love faster than ever before and his worry level had risen with each day that Dr. He just hid his heartbreak better as time went on, behind a wall of sarcasm and deductions. Sherlock had been hurt and let down more times than Mycroft cared to remember since that summer but still, Sherlock seemed to be looking for someone to love. When Mycroft returned home that summer he found Sherlock's demeanor had changed drastically and Mycroft had spent the rest of his life trying to fix that mistake. Sherlock was a bright, happy child who had never experienced sadness or heartbreak until Mycroft left for school and Sherlock stayed behind with Uncle Rudy as his guardian. Mycroft spent his life trying to protect his little brother from the same hurt he had seen their mother go through. Their mother had long since passed away and Mycroft had nothing to do with his so-called father, who now lived in the States with his new wife and family. The only person he showed any caring towards was his brother. So here he was, thirty-five years later, still holding strong to this belief. He vowed then and there that he would never put himself in a place that left his heart in the care of another. What was it all about? Why do people fall in love if it ends in such heartbreak? Why did his mother put herself in a place for heartache and sadness ? Mycroft had pondered this as a child and had come to the conclusion that caring was not a benefit. He had watched his mother spend years in a one sided relationship, only to lose herself to a darkness after his father gave up pretending. Mycroft Holmes had spent his whole life believing that caring was not an advantage.
